BELIZE

Belize is a little blip on most people’s vacation radar, but if you like fun in both the water and jungle, then don’t overlook this little spot. Cayes and a barrier reef mean great scuba/snorkel opportunities while the jungle provides a load of activities. Archaeology and history buffs can get their fill of a centuries-rich Mayan history, and a diverse population offers exposure to a variety of cultures and foods.
Belize is still a developing country so it can be a little rugged at times. Some travelers love this and relish the off-the-beaten-path opportunities, but others may not. There are no megalopolis malls or Starbucks. Your visit will likely be to small coastal or rural towns, and if you’re looking for the idyllic sun-and-swim beach experience, you’ll have a hard time finding that as well due to seagrass clogging up the coastline (unless you’re staying at a nice resort that cleans it up). On the cayes, it’s more of a “get on a boat to get to your water activity” experience. That being said, if water and jungle adventures, Mayan temples, and getting a little down and dirty sound good to you, then Belize is worth a visit.

my trip highlights
all belize posts
Ambergris Caye, Cayo/Guatemala, Placencia
Highlights include amazing Mayan ruins, kayaking through caves on a jungle river, and meeting a hungry turtle who was hoping my GoPro was edible.

The Garden House :: Airbnb in San Ignacio, Belize
Located outside of downtown in the hills, The Garden House Airbnb is a clean and bare bones cabin that offers good value for the price. Great for budget travelers.

Casa Ashley :: Airbnb in San Pedro
A modest 4-BR flat with individual rooms (or even the entire place) available for rent. Amazingly helpful Airbnb hosts who go above and beyond.
